ACUPUNCTURE
The filiform, sterilization disposable needles are usually used in a clinical treatment on selected regions for needling. The common filiform needles vary in length and diameter.
Appropriate posture of the patient is important for correct locations of acupoints, prolonged retention of needles and prevention of bending and breaking needles as well as fainting during acupuncture.
EAR ACUPUNCTURE
Ear acupuncture is a therapy to treat and prevent diseases by stimulating certain points on the auricle with needles. The scope of indication is wide. It is a commonly used therapy in clinical acupuncture treatment. Sterilization must be strict to avoid infection. Needling should not be used if inflammation or chilblain is present on the auricle. For slight inflammation, 2.5% alcohol should be applied timely to it. Ear acupuncture is inapplicable to gravid with the history of miscarriage. It is inadvisable to be used to treat the aged and patients with weak constitution and overstrain.
BLOOD-LETTING / THREE-EDGED NEEDLES
The three-edged needle is the needle shaped with a triangular head and a sharp tip, known as “Lance needle" in the ancient times, It is used to prick superficial vein for blood-letting. Pricking superficial vein for bloodletting with three-edged needle can dredge the meridians and collaterals, promote blood circulation to remove blood stasis, resuscitate the patient expel heat. It is often used to treat sthenia syndrome and heat syndrome as well as acute and chronic diseases due to Qi and blood stagnation in the meridians and collaterals, blood stasis and exuberance of pathogenic factors, such as high fever, loss of consciousness, convulsion and syncope, blood stasis in local region and pain syndrome.
CUPPING/FIRE CUPPING
Cupping is a therapy in which a jar is attached to the skin surface to cause local congestion through the negative pressure created by heat produced by ignited material in the jar. There are a great variety of jar, but the commonly used ones are bamboo jars, glass jars and pottery jars. The method is often used to treat wind-dampness syndrome, obstructive syndrome, numbness of the limbs, acute sprain, common cold, cough, stomachache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and some external diseases. It should not be used in patients with high fever and convulsion, edema as well as areas with large blood vessels, allergic skin or skin ulcer and the abdominal and lumbosacral regions of the gravid. Cares should be taken to avoid burning or scorching the skin, retention of the cup should not be too long lest impairment of the skin be caused. If the local congestion is severe after the removal of the cup, it is forbidden to perform cupping on the region again.
EAR SEED
Apart from ear acupuncture, auricular-plaster therapy is also a commonly used therapy in clinical treatment. By using small granular drugs, such as Wangbuliuxingzi (Semen Vaccariae), is fixed onto the ear acupoints with adhesive tape.
The patient is advised to press the acupoints several times a day and about I minute for each point. It is changed once every 3-5 days. Five to ten times make up one course of treatment.
SCALP ACUPUNCTURE
Scalp acupuncture, also known as “head acupuncture" is a therapeutic method to puncture specific stimulating zone on the scalp, which is mainly used to treat encephalopathy. For the patients with cerebral hemorrhage, it is advisable to treat them with scalp acupuncture after the pathological condition and blood pressure are stable.
MOXIBUSTION
Moxibustion is a therapy used to treat and prevent diseases by applying burning moxa to stimulate the human body. The material used for moxibustion is mainly Chinese mugwort leaf which is fragrant and easy to be ignited. It is processed into mugwort wool for clinical use. It has direct moxibustion and indirect moxibustion. It can be made the shape of moxa cone, moxa rool (smoking, none-smoking).
Direct moxibustion is inadvisable to perform on the face five sense organs, or the regions with large vessels.
The abdominal region and lumbosacral region of the gravid should not be moxibusted. For the patients with numbness of limbs or bradyesthesia, moxibustion be moderate lest scald be caused.
ELECTRO-ACUPUNCTURE
Electro-acupuncture is a kind of therapy by which the needle is attached to a trace pulse current after it is inserted to the selected acupoints for the purpose of producing synthetic effect of electric and needling stimulation. Different kinds of electric instruments are used. Most of them are composed of semiconductor elements and adopt oscillators. They generate low-frequency impulse current which is close to bioelectric current in the human body. Generally speaking, it can be used to treat any disease within the indication of acupuncture, especially pain syndromes, obstructive syndromes, flaccidity syndromes. It can also be used for acupuncture anaesthesia.
